Lessons Learned After Being A Dad For 2 Weeks

26 February, 2005 (12:02) | Family | By: Alexander Raiano III

I know that I’ve been a Dad for less then 2 weeks however; I’ve already learned a bunch of different things such as:

  • Don’t wake a sleeping baby: Alex is sleeping through the night now however; the first night that he did Shell and I woke him up because we were nervous.
  • If you have a good baby they will cry for 2 main reasons: 1) Their diaper is dirty 2) They are hungry
  • Every new Dad needs a TiVo: There’s nothing better then being able to pause a SU game while the baby needs to have his diaper changed.
  • Get a digital camera: I’ve taken about 300 pictures already. Imagine if I didn’t have a digital camera :).
  • Sleep when you can sleep: If you get a chance to take a nap take it. Especially when the baby isn’t sleeping through the night. Luckily for Shell and I, Alex only had 3 nights where he was up a lot.
  • That’s it for now. I’m sure I’ll have more advice soon :).

    The Past Three Days

    17 February, 2005 (11:00) | Family | By: Alexander Raiano III

Let me just start of by saying WOW! The past three days have been extremely amazing. On Sunday and Monday Shell told me that she was starting to feel some contractions however; they were still far apart. Then on Tuesday morning Shell got up a couple of times during the night because she was not feeling well. At ~ 4:00AM, she came up to the room and told me that her water had broken. Naturally, we rushed to the hospital all excited. Once we got there, one of the nurses did an exam on her and told us that her water had not broken however; her blood pressure was high so they were probably going to keep her and maybe induce labor. At around 8:00AM the doctor came in and did his exam. We were surprised when he told us that her water had broke and that she was 3-4 CM dilated! From that, point on things got even more hectic. Shell got some petosin and an epidural, which helped her with the pain. Then between 8ish and 11ish Shell was having some big contractions however; every time she had one the baby’s heart rate dropped! Alex’s heart rate was going between 130 and 70 with every contraction! Naturally, during all of this we were very nervous. Each time the heart rate dropped a nurse would run in and try to stimulate him so that his heart rate went back up. Around 11:15ish, the doctor decided that Shell need to have a C-section in order to get the baby out fast. From that, point on everything went super fast. They essentially unhooked Shell from all the gadgets she was hooked up to and rushed her to the operating room. Obviously, I was very nervous! At one point during the whole process, I was told that I wouldn’t be able to go into the operating room because they were going to put Shell under. In the operating room Shell kept telling the doctor that she wanted me in there and that she didn’t want to be put under. Luckily for us the doctor agreed and a nurse was sent to get me. I ran into the operating room just in time to see them make an incision and take Alex out. Shell was like a trooper through the entire process. I’m amazed by how well she handled things! When they pulled Alex out I was a little surprised to see that he was a boy. During most of the pregnancy, people kept telling me that we were going to have a girl. I guess people just don’t know :).

Both Shell and Alex are doing just fine. Shell has a major headache however; we expect the headache to go away within a day or so. We appreciate the emails/visits/calls/gifts that we received from everybody. Shell & Alex are expected to go home tomorrow (Friday). Stay tuned for more pics/updates. I’m sure we’ll have lots of news!

What Is A Yorkipoo? How Much Does A Yorkipoo Cost?

    12 February, 2005 (11:27) | Family | By: Alexander Raiano III

One thing to keep in mind: All of my answers to these questions are based on my own experience. I am by no means an expert on Yorkipoos or dogs for that matter…

    What Is A Yorkipoo?
A Yorkipoo is a mix between a Yorkshire Terrier and a Toy Poodle.

    How Much Do Yorkipoos Cost?
It’s hard to say how much they cost however; my dogs cost me $350 each. As of late, I’ve seen them listed for as much as $1200! When my wife and I purchased our dogs, we did not know how popular they were. We found them in the local paper’s classified ads.

    How Are Yorkipoos With Children?
Our dogs have been great with children. We have a couple of friends that have kids. Almost every time our dogs have seen kids, they have behaved well. My wife and I are expecting so, check back in the near future for more information on how well they do with kids :). Updated: Head on over to this post or this one for an update on how the pups are doing with our baby.

How Are Yorkipoos To House Break?
Both of my dogs had a rather easy time with house breaking. The male dog (Alfred) was a little tougher then our female dog (Elmira). I understand that this is normal. My wife and I live in upstate New York so it was somewhat tough to house break them in the winter. As you can imagine, both of my dogs don’t really like the cold weather. On a couple of occasions, Elmira has actually walked on her front legs in order to prevent her back legs from being in the cold snow :(.

Would You Recommend A Yorkipoo To Somebody?
My experience with my dogs has been nothing but wonderful. They are great companions. They do however; require a lot of attention so if you decide to get one you should expect to spend some decent time with them.

How Are Yorkipoos With Other Dogs?
My dogs are great with other dogs! Both my parents and my in-laws have a dog so my dogs spend a lot of time with them. It’s kind of fun to see them play with a dog that is a lot larger. Elmira is extremely submissive while Alfred enjoys barking and chasing the dogs.

Where Can I Find Pictures Of A Yorkipoo?
Strange you asked! I have a ton of pics of my dogs here.

Have Your Dogs Ever Been On TV?
Almost! We had an offer to be on CBS however; CBS wasn’t willing to pay for my wife to come along so I decided not to go. Some people say I missed my chance at fame :).

hell and I just got back from tonight’s lamaz class. Tonight we talked about basic childcare including diapering & bathing. Everything was pretty much commonsense however; it was nice to hear it just so that we feel more confident. Only 12 days and counting!
